Preparing for Your Interview
The following 7 tips for before, during, and after your interview will help you present yourself and your experience in the very best light, and give you the best chance of securing a position.
- Do your homework
Review the Jewish Home's website (www.jha.org) beforehand to get a feel for the Home's working environment and its history. This may help you prepare questions to ask your interviewer.
- Know where we are located.
Be sure to check the driving directions link. Plan for how long the trip will take you, and where you will park. Be sure to allow yourself sufficient travel time. Parking is available on the street or across from the Home behind the former mortuary. (Extra tip: Plan to arrive for your interview 15 minutes early.)
- Rehearse beforehand.
Prepare answers to common questions the interviewer is likely to ask, such as:
"What are your strengths and weaknesses?"
"Why are you interested in working at the Jewish Home?"
"Please tell me about yourself." - Secure your references.
Find at least three key people (former supervisors, co-workers, or instructors), who are willing to serve as professional references. Secure their permission beforehand, and be certain they will speak highly of you when contacted.
- Bring necessary documents.
Make a checklist of all documents that you will need for the interview. These may include extra copies of your resume, and copies of any relevant license or certification.
- Sell yourself.
The interview is your chance to be in the spotlight. Prepare a brief statement about yourself that includes your strengths and abilities, and what sets you apart from other applicants.
- Follow up.
After the interview, don't forget to send a handwritten note or friendly email thanking the interviewer for his or her time and consideration, as well as restating your interest and commitment to the position.
